Garage door springs play an important role in how efficiently the door opens and closes. When there is a problem with the springs, it not only impacts how the door operates, it also can present a safety hazard. If you suspect your garage door springs are in need of replacement or repair, here is what you need to know.  

Why Are Broken Springs a Hazard?

The garage door springs are attached in two places. There are springs above the door and above the upper tracks. The springs are under a lot of tension and are tightly wound. 

When the springs are in need of repair or replacement, they become a hazard because they can break and hit someone. If the springs break while the door was opening or closing, the door could also malfunction.  

Is It Time for a Repair?

Garage door springs need regular maintenance, such as being lubricated, but there are times that repair is needed. In most instances, when the springs are malfunctioning, you will hear a squeaking noise emitting from them.  

In some instances, when the springs are in need of repair, it will be difficult to open and close the garage door. If that is the case, you can try manually opening the door. If the door does not open and close without issue, the springs could be to blame.  

Can You Repair the Springs?

Ideally, you should call in a professional to fix the springs, but some do-it-yourselfers have taken on the task. If you decide to repair or replace the springs yourself, it is important that you take safety precautions. For instance, wear safety glasses while working on the springs. If parts of the spring do fly off, your eyes will need to be protected.  

If you are replacing the springs, you need to ensure you measure the old springs correctly. While measuring, remember to avoid touching the cones at the end and do not grip the springs tightly. Your fingers could get caught in the coils. Measure the springs from the outside. To double-check you have the right springs, you can compare the size of the new ones with the old ones.  

To avoid a safety issue and ensure the springs are properly repaired or replaced, consider hiring a professional garage door contractor.
